Year 2011
Access date 02.02.2013
Abstract

This chapter will focus on the uses and quality of web-based surveys. It will start with a brief history of web-based surveys and an assessment of their current uses, including why the web is such an appealing tool for conducting surveys.  The chapter will then turn to a review of the strengths and weaknesses of web surveys with respect to coverage, sampling, measurement, and nonresponse.  It will discuss the strengths and weaknesses of web surveys for each of these sources of error as well as innovative ways researchers have begun to deal with some of the weaknesses. In this way, the chapter will provide a comprehensive review of web-based surveys as well as potential directions for future research and development.
